Secrets to a polite pup

1. Keep him from bolting

Though your pet can’t hold open doors for you, he can learn to wait for you to walk through first. Addressing his urge to lead not only makes answering the door easier. It also keeps him safe-a dog that  darts out the door may get lost.

Training tip Before opening the door, ask him to sit, clip on the leash and rear him with a treat. Then open the door.

2. No more begging

It’s hard to resit those pleading eyes, but the behavior is annoying, and eating table scraps can contribute to unhealthy weight gain.

Training tip To help a beggar go cold turkey, gate your dog in a different room with a kibble toy during meals. If you must give him “human“ food, do so after dinner, in his bowl.

3. Stop him from jumping up

Although you know he’s being friendly, people often get scared when a pup pops up to say hello. And even a small dog can unintentionally scratch someone.

Training tip Move away if he jumps and wait for him to be calm to greet him. Also, ask him to sit before usual interactions (like petting) and only engage with him when he complies.
